Question about human psychology?

My wife works for a cute little business that helps people if they become arrested called jailstop and she told me something interesting about her work which made no sense to me. I was hoping a mental expert with some marketing background could make this make sense for me. Her company passes out flyers door to door …nothing strange about that tons businesses do that…but here is where things get crazy .. the company has two different means to pass out flyers. The first way is a free lance way they email you a flyer you print it out, come up with your own route and deliver it in any area you want to..the catch is your on the phone with their GM the whole time they log every address you hit. The pay for this is like 10 to 15 cents per flyer and if someone signs up for the service due to the flyer the person gets 10 dollars on top of that. Now the other way is the pick up way. They pick you up and take you on a route and watch you place flyers but that only pays 4 cents with no commission per flyer. Yet she says the 4 cent way is the thing most people sign up for. Why is that?? Why would someone want chump change when they can make hundreds with more freedom?? Is it the need to feel a part of a live group? Fear for having to think on your own? I really dont get it at all!!
BTW there is no type of benefits like health insurance differences ect.. I already asked if that could be a factor.

  1. sounds like a seedy company trying to avoid paying TAX. Not a legitimate business, all underhand and dodgy.

  2. It’s the hassle/no vehicle factor.

The first method requires both a car and self-motivation. In addition, it could be seen as a major pain in the **** to be on the phone with a GM the whole time (monitored constantly). You’d also have to come up with your own route. Finding a route that folks interested in a “jailstop” service would frequent is probably not going to be the safest of areas.

The second option, on the other hand, is hassle free. In addition, you don’t have to have a car.

Most folks who are willing to hand out flyers as a job are going to be people with virtually no other viable employment options. They’ve either lost their job, will never be able to get a legit job, or are being hassled by another family member to “get a job”.

Never underestimate the power of laziness. Laziness can be a HUGE factor with some folks (not all, but a significant portion). Given the option between driving and being driven around, they’ll take the “you drive me so I have to do as little as possible) option every time.

    That’s my take on it.
