What is the worst marketing ploy you have seen puppy mills/ BYBs use?

I saw a couple horrible sites yesterday. One traded puppies for conversions. Fill out a religious questionare and enter to win a puppy- they had a letter from a person thanking them for the free puppy and Jesus.

One of the Chihuahua puppies they had listed was GREEN :( Waiting to see if animal control emails me back. They had coupons and “bargain clearance” dogs.
Save a Life- there was a story out a while ago about a woman trading two kids she was watching for a Cockatoo and a few hundred dollars!

  1. I’ve never seen anything like that.

  2. I’ve seen people trying to trade puppies for Wii’s, Xbox’s, motorcyles. I’ve also seen BYB’s trying to trade one breed of dog for another so they can exploit another craze. I’ve also seen people trying to sell or stud out their “purebread razzers edge pits.” Seriously, if you’re gonna try and charge $500 for your dime a dozen pits at least know how to spell it correctly!

  3. Ah, Christians, such righteous people.

I can’t top that. It is extremely sad some human beings are such heartless idiots.

  4. I don’t think anyone can top that. I have never seen anything like that. The worst BYB I know brags about how all her pups are AKC as if that makes all her horrible breeding practices okay. She breeds every cycle from one yr on. Never skips a heat. Breeds them until they are 9 or older. i know right now she is trying to breed her 9 yr old. Had a dog “fixed” so she Could have pups, then lost the mother and pups due to her neglect in getting the mother to the vet in time. She doesn’t seem to have a clue that she is doing anything wrong.

  5. The scariest thing I have seen are miniature dalmations. The dogs on the site looked so deformed it made me want to cry. I have also seen “teacup” chihuahuas advertised with the brand of purse they would fit into.

  6. I think it’s horrific when you see “AKC” of a breed that the AKC doesn’t recognize–or that isn’t an actual breed at all!

I saw a local paper advertising “AKC Miniature Australian Shepherds” and I almost puked at the ignorancy (is that a word?)! I would have made a call to see exactly how they managed to pull that one off, but it wasn’t my paper :) and the person whose paper it *was* was leaving.

  7. The worst & scariest to me are the ones who know just enough of the right things & correct terms to use on their website into letting ppl believe they are legit & reputable breeders. The pretend they know what they are talking about but don’t really. Like saying breeders who only sell puppies with limited registration means the puppies aren’t good enough quality or those breeders don’t want you cutting into their business. Nope – it’s to stop ppl like them from breeding w/o knowing what they are doing. Either way there is way too many of them breeding poor dogs & cats.
